The most budget-friendly option and widely used for fence framing. Pressure treated posts hold up reasonably well when properly set, though in our wet coastal climate they will eventually rot, particularly at and below the ground line. Regular sealing helps extend the life of the surface boards. A solid choice for the right budget and timeline.
Cedar is a natural fit for the Cowichan Valley. It handles moisture and humidity well, resists rot and insects better than most woods, and weathers to a beautiful silver-grey if left natural or can be stained to maintain its warm tone. It costs more than pressure treated but lasts longer and looks better doing it. Where possible we recommend locally milled Vancouver Island cedar.
Corrugated steel panels set into a cedar or wood frame. It’s a modern, clean look that has become very popular in the valley, and it’s built to handle coastal conditions well. The metal panels are low maintenance and won’t rot, while the wood frame adds warmth and character. This is also the same material and aesthetic as our custom compost bins, so the two pair naturally together.
For a fully metal fence with a sleek, contemporary finish, aluminum panel systems are an excellent option. They’re lightweight, won’t rust, and require virtually no maintenance. A strong choice for homeowners who want a long-lasting, modern look with minimal upkeep. Available in matte black and other finishes.

Yes. Most of our fence work is replacing an old fence that’s past its useful life. We remove the old structure completely and build the new one properly from the ground up.

Yes. Gates are included as part of most fence projects. We build them to match your fence material and style, in whatever size you need.
In most cases, no. The CVRD does not require a building permit for residential fence construction. Height restrictions do apply though: front yard fences are typically limited to 1.2 metres, and side or rear yard fences up to 2 metres. Rules can vary between municipalities, so it’s worth checking with your local office if you’re unsure.
Fall, early spring, and winter are often ideal. Plants are dormant, there’s less in the way, and it’s easier to schedule. If your fence project isn’t urgent, the off-season is a great time to plan for.
