Deck Builder in the Cowichan Valley
Every deck is different — and it should be. We take the time to understand how you want to use your space before anything else, then build a structure that’s strong, well-crafted, and designed to be enjoyed for years.
Decks we build.
New Deck Construction
If your home doesn't have a deck yet, we can build one that feels like a natural extension of the house and works well with the surrounding yard — creating outdoor living space where there wasn't any before.
Deck Renovations
When the structure is still sound but the space needs work, a renovation can update the surface, improve the layout, or refresh the overall look without starting from scratch.
Deck Tear Down and Rebuild
Some decks are past the point of renovation. When the framing or footings are compromised, a full rebuild is the better long-term investment — done right, with current materials and construction standards.
Deck Upgrades and Additions
Sometimes the right project is focused — replacing stairs, updating railings, improving access to the yard, or adding a vinyl surface for a lower-maintenance waterproof finish.
Choosing the right material.
The best material for your deck depends on your budget, how much maintenance you want to take on, and what you want the finished space to look and feel like. Here’s an honest overview of the main options.
Pressure Treated Lumber
Pressure treated is the most budget-friendly option and works well for the structural framing of almost any deck. As a surface material in our coastal climate it requires regular maintenance — sealing and staining every few years — to hold up well over time.
Cedar Decking
Cedar is a natural fit for the Cowichan Valley. It handles our coastal wet-dry cycle well, weathers beautifully, and can be refreshed, restained, or changed down the road. Where possible we recommend locally milled Vancouver Island cedar — tighter grain, better durability, and it supports local suppliers.
Composite Decking
Composite is the lowest-maintenance option and performs extremely well in coastal conditions. It won’t rot, warp, or need staining. The tradeoff is cost — it’s the most expensive upfront — and the colour you choose is permanent, so it’s worth taking your time with that decision.
Vinyl Deck
Vinyl-covered deck systems can be a smart solution in the right application, especially when waterproofing and surface protection are important. This can be particularly relevant on certain elevated or occupied spaces below, depending on the structure.
Planning Your Deck Project
Taking a few minutes to think through these questions before we meet will help us make the most of your consultation.
-
What problem are you trying to solve?
Are you looking for more space to gather, a better connection to the yard, a safer structure, improved access, or a more functional layout? -
How do you want to use the space?
Think about whether the deck needs to support dining, relaxing, entertaining, family time, or everyday movement in and out of the house. -
Is the current deck worth improving, or does it need to be rebuilt?
Some projects can be improved through renovation. Others are better served by a full rebuild. Looking at the condition of the existing structure is an important starting point. -
What features matter most?
This may include stairs, railings, low-maintenance surfaces, privacy, weather protection, or the way the deck relates to the rest of the yard. -
What materials fit your priorities?
Some homeowners care most about warmth and natural appearance. Others prioritize lower maintenance, waterproofing, or long-term durability.
Thinking through these questions early helps create a clearer plan and leads to better decisions once the project moves forward.
Deck Building Process
A deck project should feel organized and clear from beginning to end. Our process is built around communication, thoughtful planning, and quality workmanship.
1. Complimentary Consultation
We meet on site, walk the space, and listen to what you want. We’ll ask questions, look at the existing structure if there is one, and talk through what’s realistic for your property and budget.
2. Design and Planning
You’ll receive a clear written quote covering the full scope of work, timeline, and price. Nothing starts until you’re comfortable with the plan.
3. Construction
Our team builds your deck with careful attention to structure, safety, and craftsmanship.
4. Final Walkthrough
We review the finished project together to ensure everything meets expectations.
Deck Project FAQs
Yes — we work on new builds, renovations, and full tear down and rebuild projects depending on what the property needs.
The key is the structure underneath. If the framing, posts, and footings are solid, a renovation often makes sense. If there’s rot in the structure or the footings are inadequate, a rebuild is usually the better long-term investment. We’ll assess this properly on site and give you an honest recommendation.
Yes. Stairs and railings can be their own standalone project — they don’t have to be part of a larger rebuild or renovation.
Yes, where it’s the right fit. Vinyl is a good option for certain elevated structures where waterproofing underneath matters.
It depends on the scope. Surface work like replacing deck boards or refinishing generally doesn’t require a permit. Structural changes — new footings, framing, or significant alterations — typically do. We’ll let you know what applies to your project at the consultation.
We work throughout the Cowichan Valley and surrounding communities. See the full list of areas we serve below.
